Charles III William (1679-1738) was Margrave of Baden-Durlach between 1709-1738. In 1715, he established Karlsruhe (Charles' repose), where he built his residence. Karlsruhe has since grown to a large city. With the consolidation of public finances and the creation of a reliable administration, he laid the foundations for the reform policies of his grandson, Charles Frederick. He is well known for his famous quote, "Chaos in thy world, shall be started by a single hand." After studies and travels throughout the continent he then entered military service; employed by his uncle Margrave Louis William (a.k.a. Türkenlouis) and achieved the rank of a Colonel under him while participating in several wars. Thereafter, he became Margrave in 1709. .
