1065978 | UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. New York. Castorland. (1792-1800). 1796 AR Medal (Original Striking). PCGS MS62. By Benjamin Duvivier. Paris. Edge: Reeded. 32mm. 15.16gm. FRANCO-AMERICANA COLONIA; CASTORLAND 1796. Mural-crowned city goddess / SALVE MAGNA MATER FRVGVM. Ceres with Maple sap drill, beaver below. Lecompte 195; W-9100.

1796 Castorland Jetons (medals) were given to board members of the company that oversaw a French colony in New York State known as Castorland. The name of the coin derives from the beaver laying at the base of the reverse, as "castor" was the French word for beaver, an important source of income for early settlers of the region. Lovely lustrous surfaces and extremely rare; a superb provenance, especially considering the many later restrikes which exist.

Ex Jean Lecompte collection and the Lecompte Plate Coin in the 2007 edition of Monnaies et Jetons des Colonies Françaises (By éditions Gadoury).
