The three small wreaths (coronae triumphales) symbolize the three triumphs awarded to Pompey, then also called Magnus. In his third triumph, he announced the victory of Rome, orbis terrarum (domination over the world), here symbolized by the globe. The fourth larger wreath is the aurea crown, which Pompey received as an extraordinary honor to be worn during the Games.
