The Ligurian Republic was a French client republic formed by Napoleon on 14 June 1797. It consisted of the old Republic of Genoa and the small Imperial fiefs owned by the House of Savoy inside its territory. Its first Constitution was announced on 22 December 1797, establishing a directorial republic, however it was deposed just two years later. In 1802, a doge was nominated for a 5-year term, according to the second Constitution imposed by Napoleon, and a Senate was thereby established.

The Republic was briefly occupied by Austrian forces in 1800 and suffered greatly from the conflict, however Napoleon's army soon regained control and a new constitution was published in 1802. Eventually, the Ligurian leaders gave direct control to Napoleon, which he readily accepted. In June 1805, Genoa was annexed by the First French Empire and the area was directly annexed by France as the departements of the Apennins, Gênes and Montenotte. The Republic was briefly restore once again in 1814 after the fall of Napoleon. It was then awarded to Piedmont-Sardinia and annexed on 3 January 1815 following the Congress of Vienna. [Wikipedia].
