The final negotiations held to end the Spanish-Dutch war took place in Cologne in 1580, without success. The Dutch produced this token on which the figure with the cross represents the Pope and the other the King of Spain. The King of Spain made deceptive promises of peace to Holland/Belgium by handing them an olive branch in order to soften them up or even subdue them and then to bind them, repentant, to the old ties.
