The Treaty of Fontainebleau of 1785 was concluded between the Emperor of Austria Joseph II and the Republic of the Netherlands, at the end of the so-called war of the pot (this war having as only victim a pot, pierced by a ball), by which Joseph II had tried to force the blockade of the Scheldt. The Dutch, supported by France and Prussia, however, made it back down with the payment of 8.5 million florins in November. The treaty confirms the closure of the Scheldt and also provides for the cession of some territories to the Austrian Netherlands. It was therefore thanks to the intervention of Louis XVI, the Emperor's brother-in-law, that the War between the United Provinces and Austria was averted.
