The collection of Mark and Lottie Salton encompassed thousands of gold and silver coins of Ancient Greece, the Roman Empire, and Europe from the medieval period to the 20th century. Mark Salton was the son of renowned dealer Felix Schlessinger and the nephew of Leo Hamburger in Frankfurt, then the most prominent coin dealer in Germany. The Saltons began accumulating their collection prior to the Second World War; their family and business was devastated by the persecution of the Jewish community in Germany and they fled their homeland to eventually resettle in the United States. Once they arrived they remade their lives and began again to build the collection.

As a collector and dealer himself later in life, Mark and Lottie had built an astonishing collection that surprised many of their contemporary numismatic experts when their estate and the collection was brought to the current market in a series of high profile auctions in 2022. It presented to collectors of the 21st century a remarkable collection in terms of size, quality and numismatic importance. Their collections are now accessible to present day collectors, who have an opportunity to share in this rich and storied collection and to learn from the Saltons’ connoisseurship and appreciation of all things numismatic.
