Niall Dairmid Campbell, 10th Duke of Argyll (1872-1949) was a Scottish peer and historian who was often referred to as "Scotland's most picturesque Duke." He hated telephones and motor cars and indulged in eccentric behaviors, which included greeting tourists with recitals from Italian operas. He is said to have spent his final years in what was called "monastic seclusion" and fearing that the eccentricity from his maternal relationship could be inherited, he never married and died childless in 1949.

The Duke of Argyll Collection was purchased en bloc by Spink in 1949 and it first appeared in the Spink Numismatic Circular in November of 1952. Most of the coins from the collection were acquired in the late 1930s and 1940s.
