In 1848, under the influence of the Ypres politician and numismatist Alphonse Vandenpeereboom, the municipal council commissioned Jacques Wiener to design an attendance medal. Unlike most other cities that introduced such a medal, the Ypres government gave a historical touch to their issue. As had been the custom with New Year's tokens in the Austrian period, the most important decisions of the municipal council were listed each year. The medals were issued annually until 1872. Some twenty-five different medals were issued.
