Characteristic of the gold aurei of the Boscoreale horde are is their distinct reddish patina. The Boscoreale horde was uncovered in a large Roman villa, known as the Villa della Pisanella, located northwest of Pompeii. Following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, the villa was covered in volcanic ash until archaeological work rediscovered the site in 1876. Residents of Pompeii had abandoned everything in the surrounding area as they attempted to flee the catastrophic destruction. On April 13, 1895 the remains of a vaulted box containing the Boscoreale treasure was discovered in the wine-pressing room of the villa. The box contained silver tableware consisting of 109 items and a leather bag with over 1,000 coins, of which there were many gold aurei. Following the discovery, much of the treasure was taken out of Italy, however the Baron Edmond de Rothschild (19 August 1845 – 2 November 1934) acquired most of it and thereafter donated it to the Louvre Museum in Paris in 1896.
