/ GOTT/ SCHÜTZE/ KAISER/ UND/ REICH, below IN MAINZ. Inscription on five lines within wreath. Maz.-1748B; VG-3588.
Extremely rare in gold. At the beginning of the 1860s the medalist Ferdinand Korn, who lived in Mainz, commissioned the Frankfurt mint to strike this "double thaler coin" to recommend to the Emperor. The Senate of the city promptly forbade this undertaking, resulting in a very scarce issue. Matte surfaces; in our opinion this piece is "as struck" with the dies heavily brushed to remove rust, as it matches other known examples of the restrikes.

On December 22nd In 1852, Ferdinand Korn had a medallic coin minted in the Frankfurt Mint in honor of Napoleon III, with which he wanted to apply to the French court. At that time, a total of 11 strikes, six in silver and five in tin, were produced. Later, the original stamps, the Korn had been handed over, further strikes were minted in various metals (for details see Eckhart Pick, Das Mainzer Medailleursquartett, Regenstauf 2022, p. 59 ff.).
