The original dies for this medal were made by C. Schitzspahn for those pieces awarded in 1869. Due to worn dies, Schnitzspahn's portrait for the merit and rescue medals were transferred to new dies in 1881/1882, which were also used to make this piece. The new dies differ from the old ones only in the absence of the signature.
According to Volle (in: Volle, Henning (with the collaboration of Dr. Lars Adler, Michael Autengruber, Wolfgang Thamm, Hans-Jürgen Ungar and Sascha Wöschler), These medals and wearable decorations of the Grand Duchy and the Republic of Baden. Freiburg im Breisgau, 2nd Edition 2019 (VL2), p. 284), only 199 Gold Medals of Merit were awarded between 1882 and 1907.
