Struck for the first Olympic Games in Athens from the 6th to 15th of April, and issued to the participants of the games.

The 1896 Summer Olympics were the first Olympic Games after the ancient Olympic Games were banned by Roman Emperor Theodosius I in 393 because of the worship of pagan gods. According to reports, Athens was lit up every night for the duration of the games, there were torch lit parades and bands playing the national anthems. Since the event program and invitations to evening events were written in Greek and the Julian calendar was also used in Greece, many athletes often had difficulty determining the correct date of the competition.
