The War of the Spanish Succession (1701–1714) was a pivotal conflict over the Spanish throne's succession, which pitted the Grand Alliance of the Holy Roman Empire, Great Britain, and the Dutch Republic against the Bourbon alliance of France and Spain. It concluded with the Treaties of Utrecht and Rastatt that recognized Philip V as king of Spain while redistributing European territories to maintain the balance of power and prevent the unification of France and Spain.
