Josef Wild, born 13 March 1872, began as a goldsmith in 1897. By the time Germany was mired in hyper-inflation in the early part of the 20th Century, Wild became committed to implementing something other than a fiat backed currency offered by the State. Wild stood by the gold mark of the German Empire and demanded a currency of stable value taking it upon himself to issued his own coinage struck in fine gold with the number 1,000 below the eagle, stating, "The most valuable is pure gold, called legal tender; however, it is imperative that is present the fineness stamp 1000 and the stamp of origin." Hence, 10 gold marks is equivalent to 3.57 grams.
