The three advocates referred to are: Thomas Spence, Sir Thomas More, and Thomas Paine, all of whom were prosecuted for their writings. Perhaps a reference to the card game, "Knaves", where having a knave in hand removes trick points, thus if 3 of 4 were removed from the deck it would prevent knaves getting tricks.
