Upon the death of Clemens August (19 October 1845), Geissel was enthroned as archbishop on, 11 January 1846 and later named as a cardinal by Pope Pius IX on the 30th of September 1850. Geissel lived long enough to see the completion of the Cologne Cathedral and its dedication in October, 1863. He died in Cologne the following year.
