Jan Evangelista Purkyně was a Czech physiologist, anatomist, biologist, poet and philosopher and the father of the painter Karel Purkyně. With his contribution on animal tissues composed of cells with nuclei (in Karolin in 1837), he became one of the co-founders of cytology.
