Georg Friedrich was the son of Charles II (1553-1577), and was regent of the upper territories from 1595. Upon the deaths of his older brothers he became the sole Margrave of Baden-Durlach in 1604 and de facto ruler of Baden-Baden. A pious Protestant and founding member of the Protestant Union, he later abdicated in 1622 in favor of his son, Frederick V, after his defeat at the Battle of Wimpfen during the period of the Thirty Year' War.
The Great Kipper and Wipper period refers to a period of coin devaluation that affected a large part of Central Europe and reached its peak between 1620 and 1622 during the Thirty Years' War. The name derives from the practice of fraudulent coin devaluation, namely by the rocking of the balance beams when weighing the coins on a scale and the subsequent tilting (Low German for "sorting out") of the heavier coins, from which new, lower-value coins were then produced by adding copper, tin, or lead. A large portion of the Kipper coins were melted down at the end of the Kipper period. Nevertheless, examples have survived to this day. [Wikipedia]
