Matthew Boulton was an English industrialist and manufacturer who partnered with the Scottish inventor and engineer James Watt to found the Soho Mint near Birmingham in 1788; together they created the most modern mint in the world with high pressure steam-powered coin presses capable of turning out exceptionally uniform coins at a previously unheard of speed. In 1797 Boulton and Watt produced the first regal copper coinage in a quarter century poured out of the mint: the famously heavy and perfectly round “Cartwheel” pennies and twopences struck in collars to a weight of one ounce for the pennies and two ounces for the twopences.
