The French fortress of Landau in the Palatinate was repeatedly besieged during the War of the Spanish Succession owing to its strategic importance, and consequently changed hands several times. Captured by Imperial forces in 1702, it reverted to French control in 1703, only to fall once again to the Imperials in 1704. Later in the same century, Landau was again under Siege (20 August - 23 December, 1793), when the then 3,800-manned French garrison faced near starvation when blockaged by the Prussian Coalition forces until being relieved by the French Army of Moselle. Landau then remained under French rule until 1815.
