The Institution of Mining and Metallurgy was a British research institution, founded in 1892. In 2002, it merged with The Institute of Materials to form The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining.
This medal's recipient, Brigadier Ralph Shelton Griffin Stokes, DSO, CBE, MC (1883-1979), was one of the most colourful personalities in South African mining history. After the South African War, in which he served as a trooper, he joined the Crown Reef Mine as an assistant assayer (1902), and was to serve the mines of the Corner House Group intermittently for the next 57 years until his retirement in 1959. He was a Past President and Honorary Fellow of the Institution and a medal for achievement in the South African mining and metallurgical industry is awarded in his name.
