During the Battle of Aspern on May 22, 1809, Archduke Charles of Austria was reported to have shown remarkable courage. Every time the Archduke's soldiers began to show any weakness, he would jump from his horse, grab a flag, and lead his men back into battle. After the battle at Aspern-Essling, the Peace of Schönbrunn was signed. The equestrian monument of the Archduke with his flag on horseback was rendered after a painting by Johann Peter Krafft.
