/ Draped bust of Catharine right, with hair decorated with pearls and wearing necklace. MI-489/111; Eimer 224.
For the marriage of Charles and Catharine of Braganza, 21 May 1662. Several medals and tokens were produced to commemorate the marriage however the official medallion issued for their marriage was this piece by John Roettier. Medallic Illustrations 1, published in 1885, notes:
"Rare.
This beautiful medal was executed by John Roettier, and about the time of the marriage. It was probably "The Golden Medal" [so-called for its beautiful proportions, not metal content] commemorated by Waller.
Our guard upon the royal side!
On the reverse, our beauty's pride!
Here we discern the frown and smile;
The force and glory of our isle.". Highly lustrous and conservatively graded.
