Minted during the siege by French troops under the leadership of Marshal Bezons in the War of the Spanish Succession, made on behalf of Prince Karl Alexander, later Duke of Württemberg, from his silverware.
During the fourth siege of Landau, Prince Karl Alexander, later Duke of Württemberg, was fortress commander. To counter the lack of money that arose during the siege, the Prince had his gold and silver tableware melted down and used to make emergency coins.
