During the second debasement of coinage in the Archbishopric of Salzburg in 1681, Archbishop Max Gandolph had coins of fine silver marked with a counterstamp to prevent the import of devalued coins. The counterstamp bore the coat of arms, above which was date surrounding the initial letter of the city's name. The fee for the counterstamping was to be one percent of the value of the stamped coin, so this measure was seen by the population as a hidden tax and was rejected. Countermark struck on 1648 Salzburg Thaler host coin.
