In ancient Rome, "perduellio" (perduellium) was the capital offense of high treason. Over the course of the Roman republic it was defined in the Law of the Twelve Tables, that 'he who has stirred up an enemy or who has handed over a citizen to the enemy is to be punished capitally.'

Marie Antoinette was executed by guillotine on October 16, 1793, after being found guilty of crimes against the state during the French Revolution.
