These are the last coins minted by the Canton of Bern. David Samuel Imhof, a belt maker in Burgdorf, conceived the idea using a silver plug.
The Bern mint was subsequently closed by decree of February 24, 1838. However, from 1854 to 1906, until the construction of the current mint on Bernastrasse (Swissmint), it continued to serve the Confederation as the minting site for Swiss coins.
