The octagonal chapel dedicated to the Virgin was commissioned by Leo XII and architect, Giuseppe Valadier to honor his native land, Genga, an Apennine municipality located in the present-day province of Ancona. The construction, completed by the architect Francesco Bartolini, proved extremely evocative as it stood precisely in the center of a natural cave. The entire chapel, including the decorations and statues, was also built using materials from nearby caves.
