Crown Prince Yoshihito succeeded to the throne as Emperor of Japan following Emperor Meiji's death on the 30th of July 1912. These elaborate ceremonies often took place quite some time after an Emperor had ascended the throne. The 'Shunkoden' building was constructed in 1915 for the Enthronement Ceremony of Emperor Taisho to house the Divine Mirror, one of the Three Imperial Regalia. In his coronation address, the newly enthroned Emperor announced his reign’s nengō (era name) Taishō, meaning “great righteousness”. The Emperor's health was notably weak and the brief Taishō era came to an end on the 25th December 1926.
