James II was the eldest surviving son of James I of Scotland, whom he succeeded to the Scottish throne at the age of six, following his father's assassination. The first Scottish monarch not to be crowned at Scone, James II's coronation took place at Holyrood Abbey in March 1437. He struggled throughout his reign to maintain control of his kingdom, and he was later killed by an exploding (or misfiring) cannon during his seige of Roxburgh Castle in 1460. During this era he oversaw a chaotic kingdom rife with disputes and jealousies, many of them centering on the so-called, "Black Douglasses" whom he ironically battled against with the same canons, then modern weaponry that he enthusiastically promoted, but which subsequently ended his own life.
