Stanhope was a Whig politician and served as an MP in the House of Commons. Upon his father's death in 1726, Stanhope became the 4th Earl of Chesterfield and assumed his seat in the House of Lords. He also served as a British diplomat in the Hague and briefly as the Lord-Lieutenant in Ireland. He wrote articles in the 1740's under the pseudonym "Jeffery Broadbottom".
