Marcus Junius Brutus denotes the title of his adoptive father, Q. Servilius Cæpio who was himself the legitimate son of Marcus Junius Brutus and Servilia Cæpionis– mistress of Julius Caesar. Despite the favors Caesar bestowed upon him, he remained true to his own Republican ideals and dealt him the final dagger thrust on March 15, 44 BC. Pursued by Mark Antony, and following two consecutive defeats, he committed suicide on October 23, 42 BC. His death marked the end of the Roman Republic, leaving power shared between Octavian and Antony.
