The Principality of Bayreuth had been divided between the Brandenburg-Bayreuth and Brandenburg-Kulmbach lines since 1655, then reunited in 1726 under the Brandenburg-Bayreuth line. On January 20, 1769, Frederick Christian of Brandenburg-Bayreuth died childless, and his principality reverted to Charles Alexander of Brandenburg-Ansbach.
