The Louis XIV screw press of the Paris Mint was constructed in 1699 cast from bronze cannons sourced from the royal arsenals. Its panels depict "the four virtues that govern all of His Majesty's principal actions, whether in peace or in war: Valor, Justice, Religion, and Liberality" [according to the Académie des Inscriptions]. It was used to strike the medals for the *Histoire métallique de Louis XIV* (Metallic History of Louis XIV), the gold medal commemorating the visit of Peter the Great in 1717, and the gold medal for Nicholas II in 1896.
