The Roman stronghold (or castrum) Mogontiacum, was the precursor to Mainz founded by the Roman general Drusus around 13/12 BC. Saint Martin is the patron saint of both the city and Cathedral of Mainz. 18th Century Sede Vacante coinage represents a similar design theme of the mounted saint with his emblematic sword and the beggar (cf. Zepernick 16 and 21). The "Mainzer Rad" (Wheel of Mainz) was the coat of arms of the Archbishopric of Mainz and the Electorate of Mainz in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It consists of a silver wheel with six spokes on a red background. The wheel is also found in stonemasons' carvings, landmarks and other objects.
Insignia dating from 1300 AD depicts the saint with both wheels, such as the shield of arms of Archbishop Johann Schweikhard von Kronberg (1553-1604). The city of Mainz currently uses a double-wheeled icon connected by a silver cross.
