Struck in Cartagena during the Cantonal Revolution (1873-74) when the city was besieged by forces of the First Spanish Republic and needed to mint its own independent coinage. Imprisoned forgers were pardoned in order to create dies, and the coins were struck at the Artillery Maestranza of the Cartagena Arsenal using melted-down seized silver as well as silver from the local Mazarrón mines.
